SCENE CRITIQUE

My Left Foot - Make Your Mark

One of my favorite actors is Daniel Day Lewis. I’ve only seen a few of the films he’s been in, but all of them are great. His acting is always sublime. For that reason I chose to do an early scene from “My Left Foot,” a movie exploring the life of Christy Brown, a man born with cerebral palsy where his only controllable limb is his left foot. Although Daniel Day Lewis’ acting was great throughout the entire movie, I chose an early scene where Christy if played by someone else as his younger self. I thought this would make it more interesting to analyze and critique. This scene is one of the most pivotal scenes of the whole movie. One of Christy’s older siblings is asking their father about a math problem to no avail. Christy is able to pick up a piece of chalk with his foot and try to write the answer on the floor, but nobody understands it. This is an influential moment for not only Christy but the viewer. The viewer then learns that Christy has an extraordinary mind trapped inside his body. The setting is in the sort of dining and living area of the house. This is a useful location since it is where the family would converge and be able to see what Christy is doing. The director clearly wanted to make Christy seem to appear to be in hopeless situations and yet have hope in his eyes. This is demonstrated throughout this scene a lot by the way he struggles and persists with the chalk. The music is quite faint but meaningful. It invokes mystery and suspense to whether or not Christy’s family will understand him. There are two main shot directions, one pointing towards the table where his siblings and father are sitting and the other to where Christy is. The shot of the table is almost as it would be from the perspective of Christy. This works well for the effect. There are also close-up shots of Christy as well as the shots of his foot using the chalk.
